The G.T.D.N.A. Prayer Walk Part I

Here is the first stop we come to as we exit the building and head west down Kearsley towards Grand Traverse. This little corner (N.E. corner of Kearsley & Grand Traverse) goes largely unnoticed by many, but this is the one entryway to the Grand Traverse Neighborhood. The only purpose that this used to serve is a piece of land for the old CSX railroad that ran along the river, across Kearsley, though this land, and then across Grand Traverse towards the GM plants.

There is not much to it inside except a few hilly mounds, but you can see that the path is still partially open where the railway was.

There is lot of overgrowth that has been free to grow. This collects a lot of trash as debris blows through it and gets snagged in the branches.

This is the peak of the land. Many people park here and walk across Kearsley to go fishing. The neighborhood suggested this land to us for some time of renewed purpose. Our suggestion, which was met with excitement was a sign welcoming people to the Grand Traverse District Neighborhood since this is at the the border of the neighborhood.

A view to the north @ Grand Traverse & Kearsley. On the left is "My Brother's Keeper", a shelter and ministry. To the right is the riverbank where many people fish. On this side of the street is where they park. We would still like to provide an area where they can park so that they are not totally displaced.

It would be great to draw attention to the renewal that is going on in the neighborhood instead of this building which is a reminder of the massive de-industrialization that took place in the city. *Would you believe that someone lives here???
